Travel insurance impacts - NZ government advises ‘Do Not Travel’ to the Democratic Republic of Congo

World Nomads is unable to provide travel insurance cover for travel to areas within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that have a “Do not travel” warning in place.

This follows updated advice at the time of writing by the New Zealand Government advising travelers to ‘Do Not Travel’ to certain areas in the DRC including:

  • Eastern and north-eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), including the provinces of Haut-Uele, Haut Lomami, Ituri, Kasai, Kasai Central, Kasai Oriental, Maniema, Tanganyika, North and South Kivu; and

  • within 50 kilometres of the border with the Central African Republic.

There are a number of reasons cited including safety, and the World Health Organisation declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in the DRC on 17 July 2019 following a resurgence and spread of Ebola Virus Disease cases.

What if I’m booked to travel to the DRC?

World Nomads will not provide cover for New Zealand travelers while in the areas designated ‘Do Not Travel’ by the New Zealand Government, or if they are impacted by an event while traveling there.  This includes, medical and baggage cover. Pre-trip cancellation cover is available, but only where a “Do not travel” warning was first given after you purchased the policy and after you booked the arrangements.

If you have a trip planned to the Democratic Republic of Congo and are concerned about your travel arrangements, please contact your carrier or tour operator in the first instance to confirm your arrangements.
